Fall
Fall lawn fertilizer
As temperatures drop in autumn, your lawn begins to wake up from summer dormancy. This is when we apply a fall lawn fertilizer to resupply it with nutrients. This application helps it grow strong and healthy in the fall and prepares it for the harsh winter ahead. This fertilizer also refills your lawn’s carbohydrate reserves. By the end of the summer, these storage containers can become depleted, making it necessary for you to replenish them once again.
The best time to fertilize your lawn in the fall
Start fertilizing in the fall at least 6 to 8 weeks before the first frost. Applying fall lawn fertilizer at this time of year with higher amounts of nitrogen is perfectly OK and can help lawns quickly bounce back and green-up. Fertilizer and turf will also benefit from presumably more rain, cooler day and night temperatures, morning dew, and less competition from crabgrass and broadleaf weeds.
Important lawn care steps
Along with our fall lawn care program, it’s critical you take the correct cultural steps in caring for your lawn. Here are a few procedures to consider:
This is the ideal time to aerate. Aerating creates small holes in the ground which allows air, nutrients, and water to penetrate deep into the soil. This promotes root and shoot growth.
Turf loves to grow in cool, wet weather, which means autumn is the most practical point of year to thicken up your turf by overseeding. We do not recommend aeration and overseeding in the spring or summer.
Continue to water as you normally would, but adjust accordingly.
